Your first day at home with your new family member.
Congratulations on the new addition to your family! The first day at home with a new family member can be both exciting, as well as, a bit overwhelming. Here are some tips to help make the transition smooth as possible for both you and your new furry friend!
Create a Safe Space
Set up a comfortable area with a bed, water bowl and toys where your dog can retreat and feel secure. This helps them adjust to their new surroundings.
Introduce Gradually
If you have other pets, introduce them slowly and carefully. Supervised introductions can help prevent any territorial issues. Might be a good idea for them to meet before you bring the new family member home.
Stick to a Routine
Try to establish a routine for feeding, walks and restroom breaks. Consistency will help your dog feel more secure.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Reward your dog for good behavior with treats, praise and affection. This helps build trust and encourages your dog to learn good habits.
Be Patient
Your new family member may need some time to adjust to his/her new home. They might be shy or nervous at first, but with patience and love, they’ll soon feel more comfortable.
Limit Space
Initially, limit their access to the whole house to avoid overwhelming them. Gradually allow them to explore more areas as they become more comfortable.
Visit the Vet
If you haven’t already, schedule a vet visit to ensure your new dog is healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. This should be done fairly soon after bringing the new member into the family.
Socialization
Introduce your dog to new experiences, people and other dogs/animals at a comfortable pace to help them become well-adjusted.
