What is the safest way to let your dog ride in the car?
If you are wanting to take your fur baby with you on errands, or an adventure to the dog park or to the beach, to ensure your dog's safety while riding in the car, here are few tips to consider:
Use a Crate or Carrier
A well-ventilated crate can keep your dog secure, feel safe and prevent distractions. But make sure it's properly secured in the car.
Dog Seatbelt or Harness
There is a specially designed dog seatbelt, or harness can keep your dog restrained. Simply attach it to a seatbelt to prevent movement during sudden stops.
Back Seat Preferred
It is tempting to let your dog sit in the front passenger seat but it’s safer for dogs to ride in the back seat to reduce the risk of injury from airbags deploying.
Fresh Air/Ventilation
The vehicle needs to be well-ventilated and not too hot. And never ever leave your dog unattended in a parked car.
Frequent Rest/Bathroom Breaks
On long trips, take regular breaks for bathroom breaks and exercise to keep your dog comfortable and from becoming bored.
Keep Windows Secure
If you want your dog to enjoy some fresh air, open the windows only partially to prevent your pet from jumping out. Having the child locks engaged is also a good idea.
No Riding in the Front Seat for your fur baby
As tempting as it is, avoid allowing your dog to ride in the front seat because it can be dangerous if the airbag deploys.
Familiarize Your Dog with your vehicle
If your pet isn’t used to car rides, gradually get them used to the car with short trips, rewarding them for good/calm behavior.
